The Avocado: The Simple Trick to Ripen It

Ah, the avocado! We love it, but ripening it can be a real headache. Fortunately, there is a simple and effective trick to transform a rock-hard avocado into a creamy, meltingly soft fruit.

The Rice Trick: The Secret to Maturation

To ripen an avocado faster, simply submerge it in a bag or bowl of uncooked rice. Completely bury the avocado in the rice, close the container, and let it sit at room temperature. Generally, 24 to 48 hours are enough to get a perfectly ripe avocado!

Why Does It Work?

The avocado, like the banana, is a fruit that continues to ripen after being picked. This process is due to a natural gas it releases: ethylene. By placing the avocado in the rice, this ethylene is confined around the fruit, which accelerates its maturation. The rice also helps absorb moisture.

Our Local “Péi” Avocados: A Local Delight

In Réunion, we are lucky to have generous “péi” avocados, often larger than those seen elsewhere. Their season is in full swing from February to October, with a peak production between May and July. Take the opportunity to enjoy these local fruits, which are delicious and healthy!

So, the next time you have a slightly firm avocado, you’ll know what to do!
